4th Annual "Baskets of Love"

Thanksgiving Food Drive

November 1 thru November 21, 2008

You are invited to join Planned Parenthood staff and volunteers to collect canned foods to benefit the neediest of our teen mothers and their children in our Positive Directions program. PPCWC will be accepting canned foods at all health center locations until November 21, 2007 close of business. Positive Directions is a teen pregnancy prevention and parenting program that fosters educational goals, well baby care, positive parenting skills and postponement of a subsequent birth. Our young mothers range in age from 15 to 19 years of age.

In 2003, the latest statistics available, Texas represented 75.8% of first births to girls aged 15-19 and 24.2% of subsequent births for the same age group. Currently, 17.3% of our teen clients are pregnant, 36.9% have 1 child, 26% have 2 children, 15.2% have 3 and 4.3% have 4 children. As of August, 2007, Positive Directions teen moms with 1 or more children have had NO subsequent births. Most clients have been receiving Positive Directions case work services for 6 months or longer.

Of the 46 teen parents currently on our caseload, 32 or 69% are currently enrolled in school.

If you would like more information about teen pregnancy prevention, please call our Education Dept. at 546-4574.
