Training and EducationPlanned Parenthood Association of Statement on Public School Sexuality Education Planned Parenthood of Cameron and Willacy Counties believes that sexuality education within the public school setting should provide students with information and skills about taking care of their health, assist students in understanding a positive view of sexuality, and help students acquire skills to make decisions now and in the future. We believe sexuality education within public schools should be taught by trained district staff. These programs should be developmentally appropriate and include issues such as self – esteem, relationships, friends and family, communication techniques, and decision – making; as well as age – appropriate, scientifically valid information about puberty, reproduction and reproductive health care. We believe that sexuality education within public schools should promote the prevention of pregnancy and prevention of sexually transmitted disease and encourage the avoidance of sexual intercourse as the healthiest choice during the school years. We believe that sexuality education within public schools should promote beliefs that are not racist, sexist or discriminatory and foster self responsibility as well as respect for self and others. We believe sexuality education within public schools should involve parents in curriculum selection. Parents should be notified of concepts being taught and encouraged to attend parent sessions.
